So, who’s running this freakshow?
You might have seen me under the name of “Davzz” under other parts of the Internet. Despite the blog’s tagline, this page is meant to try to showcase niche games that aren’t well known, whether due to language barrier, poor release timing or other general bad luck. A good portion of them will probably be eroge or JRPGs, because that’s what I play most, but you might see some Western stuff slip in once in a while.
I have no idea how to read Japanese but I want to try playing some games. How do you suggest I go about it?
I suggest picking up the translated copies of Super Robot Wars: Original Generations 1 & 2, familiarize yourself with them and then pick up one of the Japanese games (W is a good one.) It’s considered a very import friendly title and by the end of it you should be able to recognize some staple Japanese terms like “Move”, “Attack/Defense” and so on.
For PC games, look up Anime Games Text Hooker, a program that allows you to extract text from games and run them through a machine translator. The result is likely to be nonsense but you can still generally get a feel for what is going on in the game.
Which Eroge do you recommend that aren’t Visual Novels and have good gameplay (or redeeming features outside of graphics)?
There’s not much in the English department for now (especially if you want good ones), but thankfully there are two big ones.
English: Sengoku Rance and Big Bang Age.
And if you’re willing to go Japanese… (sorted by company)
Alicesoft: Kichikuou Rance, Rance VI. Toushin Toshi II
Eushully: Princess General series, Ikusa Megami series, Dungeon Meister Himegari.
Softhouse Chara: Nestmaking Dragon, Nangoku Dominion, Wizard’s Climber.
